About the Book

People often read the book of Ruth with a prevailing focus on the beautiful love story between Ruth and Boaz and a compassionate sympathy toward Naomi. Certainly, many wonderful insights and truths can be gleaned from this approach. However, deep spiritual gems are mined when the multigenerational relationship between Ruth and Naomi becomes the lens through which the familiar story is viewed. This fresh perspective encourages women who face tragedies, triumphs, and trials in the various seasons of life and complexities of relationships. There are great lessons to be extracted from this story. The book of Ruth, when married to New Testament teaching, provides a wealth of biblical instruction for women as they navigate life under the providential care of a sovereign God.

Four godly women, gifted as teachers and communicators, have contributed to this study. Their own life stories reflect the very challenges faced by Naomi and Ruth. They have cultivated a love for God’s Word, and they are quite skilled at applying its truths. Their desire is to see a generation of women whose lives are characterized by grace, truth, and a tenacity of faith, which remain through the ebbs and flows of life.

Those who walk through this study will readily see the parallel between the challenges of Ruth’s day and the modern day. As women learn to respond to their own challenges with biblical truth, they will embrace hope for an abundant and victorious future.

About the Authors

Beth Reed

Beth enjoys a variety of roles in life as wife, mother, teacher, and writer. Beth graduated from Mississippi State University in 1991 with a degree in economics. Beth began studying and teaching God’s Word as a newlywed. After twenty-two years of teaching and leading Bible study, her quiet study time with the Lord remains her greatest joy. Beth is married to Bob Reed, a homebuilder in the Greater Memphis area. They have three children: Ashley, Joey, and Matthew.

Carolyn Mrok

Carolyn was twenty-eight when she surrendered to the Lord, and He became her Savior. Her family has been members of Germantown Baptist Church for thirty-six years. Her main spiritual gift is teaching the Bible, which she has been doing for over fifty years. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in French and received an MA in English as a Second Language from Memphis State University. Carolyn married her sixth-grade sweetheart, Eddie, and on August 2, 2014, they celebrated fifty wonderful years of marriage. “He is still my boyfriend!” They have two grown sons, two precious daughters-in-law, and five wonderful grandchildren.

Kay Reed

Kay met the Lord in her early teens while in attendance at an old-fashioned revival meeting. Her primary spiritual gift is teaching, and she has been a Bible study leader and Sunday school teacher for almost fifty years. Her husband, Roy, and she are members of Germantown Baptist Church where he serves as a deacon. As the mother of four, grandmother of eight, and great-grandmother of one, she considers her family to be God’s greatest blessing.

Marie Strain

Marie and Lee Strain will celebrate fifty-seven years of marriage in August 2016 and live in Collierville, Tennessee, a suburb of Memphis. She has dedicated her life and ministry to teaching the Truths of God’s Word and training others how to study the Bible for themselves, so that they can know their God more intimately and serve Him more faithfully. They have two grown daughters who presently live with their families in Tennessee and Alabama. Lee and Marie attend Germantown Baptist Church where Marie teaches a Sunday school class of ladies in various “life stages.” She has been leading a weekly Precept Upon Precept Bible study class for the past thirty-six years. Marie wishes to acknowledge that Kay Arthur and Betsy Bird, through Precept Ministries International, have invested much time, energy, knowledge, and love, which have contributed immeasurably to her own personal spiritual growth and in the equipping and effectiveness of her God-given ministries.
